One in five people aged 50 to state pension age were not in employment, training, education or retirement (NETER), compared with 13 per cent of 16 to 24 year olds classed as NEET, according to a survey by the Centre for Ageing Better. Separately, 918,000 people aged 50 to state pension age were interested in or actively seeking work between October and December 2025, up 22 per cent in two years and the highest figure since 2020.
The findings were reported by People Management on 10 September 2026, citing research and a survey from the Centre for Ageing Better.
