Korn Ferry reports that the average age of board directors is 61. It says 14% of last year's new directors were aged 50 or younger, an uptick from the year before. It also reports that roughly two-thirds of companies in the S&P 500 index mandate retirement for board members at age 75, up from age 72 six years ago.
In a separate Korn Ferry survey of 250 CEOs and board members, 60% of those with 11 to 15 years of experience said they felt confident in their organisation's ability to manage unexpected risk, compared with 36% of those with more than 20 years of experience.
Korn Ferry published the findings in its This Week in Leadership series on 10 September 2025.
