You were dangerous once.
Not reckless. Dangerous.
You backed your own judgement before anyone approved it. You said the true thing. You made the call that was yours to make.
You can still feel where it used to be.
No one took it from you. They paid you to put it down.
The first time you softened the true thing, the room eased and the praise came. So you did it again. The edge got smoothed. The sentence got safer. And every time, something arrived. A nod. A stretch role. The raise the year you stopped making trouble. You learned. The harder call offered less and less, until your hand stopped reaching for it.
They rewarded the smaller you, and because the rewards kept coming, you called it growth.
It was not only done to you.
So be honest now, because nothing changes until you are.
In the moments that counted, you saw the right thing and chose the smaller one. You knew. You called it judgement, and you went home.
No one made you. You took the deal. Again and again.
Not today, you tell yourself. There is time. The real call keeps for a quieter month, and the quieter month never comes.
And nothing dramatic comes of it. You perform. The praise arrives. The leader who once knew the right thing shows up less and less, until one ordinary day they do not show up at all. And you do not even know they went.
You will call it a good career.
So decide.
We believe a leader is meant to be dangerous.
We believe that is where our best work comes from, and our best life.
We believe the wild in us was never killed, only put to sleep.
And we believe what was trained out of us can be taken back.
Three moves.
Recognise domestication. If you have read this far, you have already started.
Refuse editing. The sentence you are about to soften, leave it hard. The smaller thing your hand reaches for, do the larger one.
Reclaim wildness. What they trained out of you was never killed. It was only put to sleep.
Some of you already know. You do not need the rest of this page.
And do not do this alone. Alone, you are the difficult one, and the difficult one gets managed back into line. The taming holds by keeping each of us sure we are the only one who feels it.
The others were always there. Kept apart, so none of you could be certain. Here you find them. People who back your call the morning after you make it, and whose calls you back. You make the dangerous decision and you are not standing there alone.
Something you had lost comes back with it. The work stops grinding you down, and you remember it was meant to be worth doing.
A leader like that is the one worth following. Dangerous enough to back their own judgement, and to make room for everyone around them to back theirs.
They stop running the place like a machine for yield, and start tending it like a forest, where people grow.
The calls that never get made.
Alone you can stop the wrong call in your own reach. The one in your remit.
And the calls that get stopped are the ones everyone saw coming and nobody else would touch. The redundancies dressed up as restructuring. The product shipped knowing it wasn’t safe. The supplier squeezed until something broke. The number massaged before the board saw it. Someone in the room knew. And said nothing.
It compounds. The more of us who refuse, the more refusing reads as normal, until even the leaders who never joined find the bad call harder to push through. The room no longer lets it pass clean.
All of us doing it at once. Fewer bad calls, where those calls actually land. On the people who never get a say in them.
I was dangerous once. They trained it out of me. I am becoming dangerous again.
If that is you, you are one of us.
Stand where we can see you.
