Strategy adoption tied to shared emotional engagement

Research into how new strategies take hold within organisations found that a direction only gains traction when leaders have worked through the fears, hopes and conflicts it provokes. Shared emotional investment among executives, rather than simple agreement on logic or metrics, appeared central to whether a strategy was adopted in practice rather than merely approved on paper.

The finding was published in Harvard Business Review on 29 October 2026.
